Chapter Twelve

Billie

“You know what I think?” I mumbled, stuffing nearly the whole pint of generic but calorifically delicious mint chocolate chip ice cream into my mouth in one bite.

Jay laughed. “What’s that?”

“I think—” I swallowed, giving myself mouth freeze and brain freeze. “Ow, ow, ow!”

“What’s wrong?” He was all worried and cute as he flicked the turn signal on and began to pull off to the side of the road.

“It’s fine. I’m fine. Brain freeze.” Sucking my tongue to the roof of my mouth, I shook my head until my brain unfroze. A weird trick I remembered learning from my dad when he’d buy me slushies at the Zip Mart. Probably one of the only useful things I ever learned from him. I would’ve remembered those slushies with my dad with fondness if he hadn’t used them to hide his drinking. Slushies mixed with vodka. Yuck.

“I think Theo is after Blake. Not the other way around. I think he’s tired of being blackmailed, and he intends to put a stop to it. I think he’s worried about what this Blake guy might do to get more money. I think Blake killed the maid and driver, and I think that’s why Theo wanted Ace to go to the ranch.”

“Did you tell Carey?”

“Of course I told Carey, and he’s on the same page. Don’t worry, you know the guys won’t let her out of their sight. I think this guy is running from Theo. That’s what my gut is telling me. But assuming that’s all true, why did Theo’s dad give this guy money in the first place? Why did he pay Blake’s dad after they’d dissolved their business? What did they have on Theodore Burroughs, Sr.?

“I’ve gotta find it. And why is he working with Giovanni? It makes no sense. That’s why we need to catch up to Theo. I think he’s on some kind of vigilante quest and… I don’t know. I’m just getting a bad feeling.”

“Yeah, me too,” he said, and then we heard a big flopping chugga-chugga-chugga sound. We bumped and bounced on the road, then swerved into a ditch.

“Jay! What did you do?”

“Nothin’, Billie.” I could actually hear him roll his eyes. “We got a flat front tire. You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. You?”

“I’m okay.”

“How do you know it’s the front tire?”

“’Cause we veered to the right, and our back end didn’t swerve any. It’s on your side.”

Yep. When I stepped out of the Jeep, we had a very flat, front passenger-side tire. Huh. It never would have occurred to me which tire was flat by the way we’d swerved. It was kind of impressive he knew that. A little bit sexy, too, if I was being honest.

“Great. Now we’ll have to wait for the rental company. Theo’s getting further and further away.” It wasn’t like me at all, but I felt panicked. I really wanted to catch up to him. Ace needed him.

“Billie, it’s okay.” Jay walked around the front of the car. “There’s no damage to the car.
